What makes 'great athlete' Imam Jagne such a monumental Everton signing?

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Everton made some pretty eye-catching additions in the summer. Big names like James Rodriguez, Allan, and Abdoulaye Doucoure all found their way into the building at Goodison Park.

But the Toffees also brought in some new faces to strengthen the youth team at Finch Farm.

Niels Nkounkou has since superseded that level and moved straight into Carlo Ancelotti’s first-team plans but Imam Jagne is still only a kid at 17-years-old.

Everton signed the Swedish youth international from BK Hacken in October after a lengthy pursuit of his services.

It is something of an historic signing. Since Everton snapped up Jagne, new laws have been announced that come into play in January. Everton would not be able to sign Jagne if they were trying to complete this deal in the new year as clubs in England are no longer able to sign players under the age of 18 from inside the EU.

It is likely one of the reasons why Everton swiftly wrapped up a deal in October, before the changes came to pass.

Since his move Jagne has immediately become a fledgling member of David Unsworth’s under-23s.

The former first-team left-back has been impressed with what he has seen so far from the energetic midfielder.

“He’s going to be a great athlete,” Unsworth told the Liverpool ECHO in November. “He can handle the ball, he’s a great presser of the ball.

“I’d say when he develops and matures he will be more of a box-to-box midfielder. He’s got great energy and you don’t want to bog him down into a holding midfield role.”

Everton have not had much success with foreign talent coming through the youth ranks. Jagne might be the last to arrive in this manner.

Hopefully, the Swede can buck that trend.
