Everton appear to be on the brink of a new signing with numerous reports suggesting the club are closing in on a deal for Bayern Munich talent Joshua Zirkzee. TalkSPORT is reporting that Everton are closing in on an initial loan deal for the 19-year-old frontman which could become permanent at the end of the season.

There are other clubs said to be interested in Zirkzee around Europe but Everton appear to be at the front of the queue for the time being.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently sidetracked with a hamstring injury so Zirkzee could be seen as an immediate option for the first-team if Marcel Brands can get a deal done for his teenage countryman over the next couple of weeks.

But what would the arrival of Zirkzee mean for another of Everton’s strikers, who is currently pushing for a place in the first-team?

The recent injury for DCL saw Carlo Ancelotti call Ellis Simms into the matchday squad for the FA Cup tie with Rotherham United earlier this month but he has still failed to force his way into the Premier League picture.

That is despite his incredible scoring record in Everton’ youth teams, including eight goals in 11 games for David Unsworth’s under-23s so far this season.

Plenty of Everton fans have wanted to see Simms get his chance in the first-team at Goodison Park but if Zirkzee came along, it is hard to see how that might happen.

Simms is older than the Dutch striker and has less first-team experience than the Bayern back-up. Immediately, Simms would be pushed further down the Everton pecking order.

It could be a move for Zirkzee sees Simms head out on loan, where he might be able to prove himself as a potential Everton option.

But it is hard to see how the arrival of Zirkzee would be a good thing for Simms’ career going forward.
