Why Everton could yet face a third PSR punishment as finance expert reveals all

It seems that nobody truly knows what to make of Everton’s current issues, and whether they will earn success in the first of two appeals.

Having been handed a ten-point deduction back in November, and been found to have allegedly breached the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules earlier this week, it truly feels like the world is against this club at the moment.

Whilst some protest their steadfast innocence, others argue that the worst is yet to come. The latter notion is certainly one theory that finance expert Stefan Borsic subscribes to.

But what could be next for Everton? Could things actually get any worse? We take a closer look…

What did Stefan Borsic have to say on talkSPORT about Everton?

Well, speaking live on talkSPORT (18/01, 11:08 am), he spoke to Simon Jordan and Jim White as they sought to dig deeper into the financial troubles plaguing much of the Premier League.

Although a focus on Manchester City was natural, given he used to be a financial advisor for the Etihad outfit, he did start off the show by shedding some light on Everton’s plight.

He started by noting: ‘Look, at the end of the day, the independent Commission hinted that they failed for 22/23. It said that the trend was not positive for Everton in its adjudication of the previous season, so it’s no major surprise that Everton have failed as well and to be honest, when you look at the numbers, they’re probably going to fail for 23/24 as well.’

This piqued White’s interest, who interjected: ‘Oh, so another charge would come their way?’

‘Well, correct,’ Borsic replied. ‘If you do the maths on what a failure in 22/23 must infer about their losses for the period to the end of June 2023, it must infer that they had a PSR loss of £85m because the other two-year period that goes in is only around £20m of loss.

‘So that means that the PSR loss that must be there that we haven’t seen yet for 22/23 must be £85m or there or thereabouts, so that means that when you knock off the third year back, which will be the COVID year when you’re doing the assessment that’s coming for this season, that means they’re going to have minus 20, minus 85, and then they’re going to have to somehow in this year, to balance it, they’re going to have zero. It’s impossible.’

It does not look good for Everton

It is hard to argue with those figures, although it does seem somewhat disingenuous to write off Everton escaping another sanction.

After all, in both Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, they boast two hugely sellable assets that could offset those vast losses.

Whilst offloading either of those stars would preferably be avoided, if it meant securing the financial future of the club, there would simply be no other option.

A third punishment would surely condemn the club to certain doom, and would mean that they had failed to appeal the two beforehand.
