Everton will be watching with envy as a former player impresses at AFCON, outperforming Victor Osimhen in the process.

At Goodison Park over the years, there’s been some players who have been sold and gone on to achieve great things.

Wayne Rooney is the biggest example of a player that Everton would’ve loved to keep throughout his successful career, to a much lesser extent Neal Maupay is doing it this season as he shines at Brentford.

Now though, Ademola Lookman is showing signs that he could join the list of players who have impressed after departing the Toffees.

Sold for £23m five years ago to RB Leipzig, Lookman hasn’t set the world alight in Germany, he’s now tearing it up in Italy for Atalanta and at AFCON for Nigeria.

Ademola Lookman is showing up Osimhen at AFCON

Right now, Lookman is at AFCON with Nigeria where they are in the semi-finals of the competition. He’s partnered in attack by Victor Osimhen from Napoli who was close to a Chelsea move for £112m last summer.

But in AFCON, it’s Lookman who’s been impressing the most for the Super Eagles alongside fellow former Toffee Alex Iwobi.

Both have played five games, with Lookman getting three goals for his tally, while also assisting one. In comparison to this, Osimhen has only scored one goal and made one assist which for a player of his quality is poor.

He’s been on fire in the competition and will be hoping this continues and Nigeria can go on to lift the AFCON trophy. But it isn’t just AFCON he’s been impressing in this season, with his domestic displays also catching the eye.

Lookman has been impressing for Atalanta as well

This season for Atalanta, Lookman has continued where he left off last season and has clearly found the league where he is best suited.

Last season he played 31 games for Atalanta, scoring 13 times and assisting six goals. This season he’s continued in an impressive vein of form with seven goals and three assists from 18 games.

This is a similar return to his compatriot Osimhen who’s managed seven in 13 along with two assists which is a slight decrease on his 2022/23 tally.

Lookman is finally showcasing his talent away from Everton and at this rate, we wouldn’t rule out a big move this summer back to the Premier League now he’s found himself as a footballer.

Maybe even a return to Everton to ease the goalscoring woes up front at Goodison Park.
