David Moyes is not always the warmest communicator towards his players at Everton.
The Glaswegian hit out at Tyler Dibling earlier this season, while also ignoring Adam Aznou entirely when directly asked why the Morocco international and Merlin Rohl are struggling for minutes.
Moyes has also been pretty harsh towards Beto despite his efforts for the Toffees this season, and as the Everton No.9 approaches the final 12 months of his contract, we doubt he would want to keep working under these conditions at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
No win in any of Everton’s last five games… what would you say to David Moyes? 🫣
David Moyes needs to show more respect towards Beto
Even during pre-season, Moyes was critical of Beto.
Before a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in a friendly, he said: “I’ve been a bit disappointed with Beto and I’ve told him. We’re needing a bit more and he can do more and he has done more. So we’re hoping we can get a bit more from him.”
After the 3-2 win at Newcastle in February, a match in which Beto actually scored, Moyes added: “You have to play and do well. We accept you don’t always score goals but you have to do well for the team.”
Moyes then called Beto “limited” before the recent 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace, another game in which the Guinea-Bissau international scored.
The 63-year-old said: “He’s great with his work rate and what he tries to do. He’s limited in other aspects but you’re just beginning to see some goals. I’ll need him to score a few more between now and the end of the season.”
The fact of the matter is that Everton would be much worse off this season without Beto – who cost £26m in a move from Udinese back in August 2023 – and Moyes should be more appreciative of him.
The former Benfica striker has netted nine goals in 35 Premier League appearances, including a winner in the 3-2 victory at Molineux, an equaliser in the 1-1 draw at Brighton, a decisive goal in the aforementioned 3-2 win at Newcastle, not to mention two goals and an assist in the 3-0 win over Chelsea.
Beto also scored in recent 2-2 draws against both Brentford and Crystal Palace.
So, without those goals, Everton would be nine points worse off, hypothetically putting the Toffees on 40 points and down in 16th place at the time of writing.
Beto is delivering while Thierno Barry has struggled, but for whatever reason, the 28-year-old often gets spoken down to by Moyes.
Should Everton actually be getting Beto tied down to a new contract? 🤔
He'll only have a year left this summer…
So, when it comes to potentially discussing a new contract with Beto – Andy Burnham’s favourite player – we have no idea why he would want to continue working in such a negative environment with such little appreciation for his efforts.
