Alan Myers says he no longer thinks Everton will sign £25m player this summer

Everton are far from the most attractive proposition in the world at the moment, making Kevin Thelwell’s job far harder than it needs to be.

Their financial troubles, and recent Premier League season wrought with deductions, will have most players fearful of what might be next in line for the Toffees.

However, what those who snub the opportunity fail to see is the brighter, more sustainable future being forged, set to be further enhanced by moving into their new stadium too.

Even that allure is seemingly not proving enough for one target, with a club so stubborn that their inability to strike a deal has now spanned way over 12 months.

Alan Myers makes Everton transfer prediction

Although Everton’s interest in a £25m move for Wilfried Gnonto has been longstanding, fears over how long it is taking are only growing.

After all, last summer was completely overtaken by a saga involving the Toffees and the 20-year-old, and ended in their inability to convince Leeds United to part ways.

This transfer window seems set to end in much the same way given the lack of progress in negotiations.

And now, in what is so often a killer blow for transfer rumours, Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers has come out and had his say on the matter.

Asked by a fan if the deal for Gnonto was more or less dead, his reply was hardly inspiring, simply writing on X: ‘Nothing is ever over till it’s over, but I’m not expecting it atm.’

Everton still need a winger despite Wilfried Gnonto failure

Regardless of whether it is Gnonto acquired or not, Everton still need a winger.

After all, a Danish football expert revealed that Jesper Lindstrom’s favoured position is more central, so despite that acquisition they remain barren out wide.

Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil impressed last season, but occasionally struggled due to their one-dimensional play styles.

This proposed injection of pace and dynamism would have been welcomed from the Italy international, who ranks in the top 10% for progressive carries per 90 when compared to other wingers across Europe’s next 14 leagues outside the top five.

Frustratingly, there has been a distinct lack of alternative targets to Gnonto, especially after their failed efforts to sign Jaden Philogene, with Everton’s interest in Yaser Asprilla seemingly having cooled too.

Thelwell has earned the trust of the fans, but they will want him to whip up some kind of solution sooner rather than later to a long-time problem of the clubs.
