At the time, Sean Dyche’s Everton sacking was quite controversial.

Many felt Sean Dyche was squeezing the maximum out of a very poor Everton squad, so when the Friedkin Group dismissed him in January, it caused quite the stir in the media.

David Moyes was quickly brought in as his replacement and even that appointment was met with mixed opinions.

But, Moyes has proved his doubters wrong as he’s managed to steer the Toffees well clear of relegation danger.

After Everton’s 1-1 draw against Arsenal, they now reside a whopping 15 points ahead of the bottom three, which is a far cry from where they were at the start of the year.

Alan Shearer got it wrong with David Moyes appointment

Alan Shearer was one of the pundits who was unsure about Moyes’ appointment in January, and he’s now admitted that he got it completely wrong.

“I said I thought it was a big gamble for David Moyes to go back into Everton but what an incredible job he has done and is doing,” Shearer explained.

Since Moyes’ return, Everton have been the sixth best team in the country in terms of points won, so evidently, the Friedkin’s decision has been vindicated.

The Toffees went on a run of nine games unbeaten until the Merseyside derby last week, which was their longest streak since 2012 – which was Moyes’ final season at Goodison before he departed for Manchester United.

Everton should aim for top 10 next season

The next step for Moyes is reestablishing Everton as a top 10 side in the Premier League and that’s a realistic goal to set next season.

The Friedkin’s will back Moyes with a healthy budget in the summer, too, so he’ll have the resources to achieve that goal.

He’ll of course need a new winger, with Jack Harrison heading back to his parent club Leeds United at the end of the season.

And, it’s understood that West Bromwich Albion wide player Tom Fellows is of serious interest to the Everton boss.

A striker will also be top of Moyes’ list of priorities, as Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja are due to leave.

Everton could sign Rangers’ Hamza Igamane as their replacement after his sensational debut season Scotland.
