Everton finished the season with a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur – and Alan Shearer’s verdict will be shared by many.
The 2025/26 is officially over now, and Everton finished in 13th place.
How do you even sum up that performance? 😡
Utterly woeful from Everton on the final day…
Perhaps that would have been considered a success before a ball was kicked this season. But context is everything, and this is a hugely disappointing outcome.
Everton were well in contention for European football right up until the penultimate game against Sunderland. The 3-1 loss to the Black Cats all but ended the club’s hopes.
So Everton pitched up at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium without much riding on the fixture.
And the performance really reflected that, leading to criticism from Alan Shearer.

Alan Shearer calls out Everton’s lack of quality up top vs Tottenham

Everton came into the game against Spurs having not won any of their previous six games.
This was a chance to finish the season in the right way, and beat a team that have struggled all season long, and a team that were under major pressure due to the possibility of relegation.
But Everton made life so comfortable for their opponents, barely laying a glove on Spurs during the contest.
And on The Rest Is Football podcast, Alan Shearer gave a verdict most would agree with. He said: “I thought Spurs were the better team. I thought Everton were really poor.
“There was only one opportunity where the goalkeeper made a good save in the last minute or so. I know it was really edgy and nervy. But they weren’t put under too much pressure Spurs, because I thought Everton were terrible up front. They offered nothing.”
Thierno Barry was particularly poor against Spurs after being surprisingly called into the starting XI over Beto.
The Frenchman offered zero threat, and was arguably left on for far too long before being replaced.
Gary Neville was also critical of Everton’s final day showing against Spurs, stating during the game that the players were on the beach.
Certainly, the performance lacked intensity and ingenuity, which was very disappointing to see. The sweltering conditions perhaps played a part, but it was the same for both teams and Spurs showed more determination to get the win.
Tyrique George looked good once he came on. That has been a running theme in recent weeks.
That was a disgraceful performance from Everton… something has to change! 😤
But arguably he once again came on too late. He should have come on at half-time, with Iliman Ndiaye having produced yet another poor performance.
Overall, it was just a really poor day at the office for Everton with Moyes making a string of questionable calls.
And that is understandably now leading to conversations within the fanbase about the manager’s position.
