Everton signed Alex Iwobi from Arsenal for around £34m during the summer of 2019.
Alex Iwobi endured a difficult start to his Everton career, as he netted just one Premier League goal in his first season.
Speaking to The High Performance Podcast this week, Iwobi spoke about the challenges he faced on Merseyside.
“Especially me, a Londoner, used to playing, used to having a lot more possession of the ball to go into Everton where, with all due respect to Everton back then, their main focus was slide tackling people, smashing people, running hard. And it’s never been in my nature.
Is Moyes still underappreciated by Everton fans for the job he’s doing? 🤔
“So, they used to say, this Londoner is so soft, he needs to focus on getting the ball back. He doesn’t want fancy flicking, I’m just thinking, oh, like I’m trying to adapt here.
“And obviously, for me, it felt like a foreign country because the Scouse language is a bit mad for me.
So I couldn’t understand what they were saying at first. I couldn’t understand what they were saying.”

Alex Iwobi has stepped up a level since leaving Everton
Iwobi’s Everton career spanned across Everton’s difficult period, when they were fighting to survive in the Premier League.
What should Everton be willing to pay to bring back Grealish over the summer? 💰
In fact, Sean Dyche had to sanction the Nigerian’s sale in the 2023 summer transfer window to help the club’s PSR position.
Since leaving the Toffees, Iwobi has really stepped up a level at Fulham, as reflected by his statistics.
| Club | Games | Goals | Assists |
| Arsenal | 149 | 15 | 23 |
| Everton | 140 | 9 | 17 |
| Fulham | 103 | 19 | 11 |
He’s doubled his goal tally in significantly fewer games with the Cottagers, and even assists-wise, he’s not far behind surpassing his Everton record already.
Iwobi has played in a multitude of different positions this season, with Marco Silva using him as a left-winger, attacking midfielder, central midfielder and even as a number six.
