Carlo Ancelotti has clearly been keeping a close eye on his former club after the Real Madrid boss heaped praise on one of Everton’s current squad.
Sean Dyche’s defensive unit was the heart of the team’s success last season. James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite were imperious at times, and the pair can feel aggrieved to have missed out on England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Branthwaite – who was labelled “outstanding” last season – was Everton’s best performer. As a result, the Cumbrian has been the subject of intense transfer interest from Manchester United.
After two low-ball bids were rejected, Fabrizio Romano has claimed Everton are now preparing to offer Branthwaite a new and improved deal.
Carlo Ancelotti likes what he’s seen from Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite

Evertonians have fond memories of Ancelotti’s two-year tenure at Goodison Park. The Italian had Dominic Calvert-Lewin on top form, and talk of European football was firmly on the agenda.
However, as is always the case, when Real Madrid come knocking the call is answered. Regardless of his disappointing exit, Ancelotti has spoken of his admiration for Branthwaite, who has caught the Italian’s eye.
Discussing England’s future aspirations on The Obi One Podcast, Ancelotti said: “They’re really close. They have fantastic players. Bellingham, Palmer, Mainoo. Gordon was my player. Branthwaite, who is doing really well at Everton. Another centre-back [who is] young. I am sure they’re really close [England].”
Everton are building youthful backline ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season
Keeping hold of Branthwaite is non-negotiable for Dyche.
The 22-year-old is the player Everton must be looking to build the team around. Thankfully, talk of a move to Old Trafford has simmered somewhat, with Branthwaite currently absent due to a fitness issue.
After the Toffees captured the signing of Jake O’Brien, Evertonians are right to be encouraged by Dyche’s defensive options.
The Republic of Ireland international has enjoyed an eye-catching spell with Ligue 1 side Lyon and looks primed to move up to the Premier League. And if Branthwaite remains, Everton could have a central defensive pairing set for the long term.
