Everton desperately want a new winger to bolster their frontline, but if they’re being honest, there is a position looking far more perilous than any other.
And, frustratingly enough, it’s an area that has been looking sparse for years now.
Seamus Coleman’s steady regression has been painful to watch, with the 35-year-old stalwart having seen his body fail him time and time again.
He remains revered on Merseyside, but the need for his replacement has been evident for so long.

And yet, it has never come, with countless managers ignoring this glaring deficiency.
Fortunately, it seems like they are now looking into a solution, but it’s mind-boggling that it has taken until deadline day to do it.
What’s the latest on Everton target Lorenz Assignon?
Regardless, it’s journalist Fabrice Hawkins who is the latest to provide an update on Everton’s interest in Lorenz Assignon, just as he did a few days ago.
And, whilst he does not explicitly reference the Toffees this time, his post is in response to his initial one that did reveal their plans to try and sign him.
This fresh piece of information simply reads: ‘Lorenz Assignon will not sign for OM. Rennes does not want to loan him to Marseille.’ A boost for Everton, it seems.
Everton are also trying to sign Kieran Trippier today, but could be swayed by the diminutive £8.5m price tag that was quoted for Assignon earlier this summer.
Everton desperately need a right-back
Whether it be Assignon, Trippier, or someone else entirely, the fact of the matter is that Everton desperately need a new right-back.
After all, Coleman has proven himself an injury liability despite his commitment to the club, as has Nathan Patterson time and time again.
Then, moving down the list of players who can play in that role, it took Ashley Young less than a full Premier League match to once again remind fans why he is not good enough to be starting at this level anymore, with his opening-day sending-off indicative of his reckless nature.
Not one to be trusted, Assignon would provide security and a touch of creativity from the right flank, where there has otherwise been none for years.
During his six-month spell for a truly awful Burnley side last season, the Frenchman shone as one of few standouts.

This was exhibited in his numbers in the Premier League, recording three goal contributions from just 15 starts alongside 0.9 key passes, 2.3 tackles and 2.7 clearances per game, via Sofascore.
Whether it be just for a season on loan, or for the £8.5m figure touted earlier in the window, this would represent smart deadline-day business from Everton.
