Could David Moyes become new Scotland manager after Steve Clarke exit?

Steve Clarke has just resigned as Scotland manager following their World Cup exit.

After beating Haiti 1-0 in the opening game, Scotland suffered back-to-back defeats to Morocco and Brazil.

Clarke was visibly distraught after the bruising 3-0 loss to Brazil, and many criticised his spiky reaction to certain questions.

Surely the writing is on the wall now?

So, it’s not massively surprising that the 62-year-old has decided to leave his position following confirmation that Scotland’s third-place finish wasn’t good enough to advance to the round of 32.

So, the question is, who next?

Already, Everton boss David Moyes is being heavily tipped to become the new Scotland manager.

David Moyes tipped to replace Steve Clarke as new Scotland manager

Moyes is emerging as the early frontrunner to replace Clarke, and he would certainly be a very popular appointment among supporters.

However, it’s not realistic for the Toffees boss to join just yet, as he still has one year remaining on his contract at Finch Farm.

As it stands, Moyes hasn’t been offered a new deal, so he’s set to depart Merseyside after the 2026/27 campaign.

The Friedkin Group are likely to wait and see how Moyes fares next term before making a decision on his future.

There is a growing section of the fanbase that would like change, and it wouldn’t at all be surprising if the American owners agree with that sentiment, as the Scotsman doesn’t seem to be aligned with their recruitment policy.

The Friedkins want to drive down the average age of the squad and recruit promising young talent, as evinced by the additions of Tyler Dibling and Adam Aznou, but Moyes has been quite resistant to that.

So, the Scottish FA may decide to bring in an interim coach for now, before going all out to appoint Moyes when his Everton contract expires during the summer of 2027.

The EURO 2028 qualifiers don’t get underway until March 2027, so he would only miss the first few games.
