David Moyes explains why his second Everton spell has been ‘miles better’ than expected

David Moyes has told Leon Osman of a few reasons why his second spell at Everton has been so brilliant.

David Moyes returned to Everton 15 months ago after the club and Sean Dyche parted ways midway through the 2025/26 campaign.

Some were initially concerned about Moyes’ return, suggesting it’s never too wise to go back.

But the Scot steadied the ship, and has kicked on this season despite having to contend with a number of injuries throughout the campaign.

Moyes has Everton challenging for European football right now, with the club actually just three points off the Champions League spots.

His stock could not be much higher at the moment, and Moyes has been speaking about his second spell and how it’s exceeded his expectations so far.

David Moyes says second Everton spell has been better than expected for three reasons

Moyes sat down for an interview with his former player Leon Osman, mainly to talk about his first spell as manager.

Moyes spoke about playing Wayne Rooney out of position, which perhaps explains why Harrison Armstrong has had to play out wide at times recently.

He also touched on various other players like Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines, Mikel Arteta, David Weir and Alan Stubbs.

But before all of that, Osman asked him about the past 15 month, and Moyes admitted that his second spell has actually gone much, much better than he envisaged.

He said (via Everton official): “It’s been great Ozzy, it’s been miles better than I could ever have expected. Mainly because the players have been so good. The crowd have been brilliant to me.

“And hopefully in our own way we’ve been sort of brilliant to them as well, because we’ve jumped a lot of places when we first took over.

“I’m not saying we can make Europe, but we look as if we’re going to challenge for that sort of position. And it’s a bit like the positions we were in maybe in our days – I want to get back to that.”

A match made in heaven

It’s interesting to hear Moyes admit he didn’t think his second spell would have gone this well so far.

A lot of fans also probably didn’t see this fairly rapid progress coming, as Everton sit just three points outside the Champions League places.

What has been clear to see over the past 15 months though is that Everton and Moyes are just a match made in heaven.

The football may not be swashbuckling, but it’s certainly competitive. Everton now go into any given game capable of taking points, with the team’s formidable defence and tremendous work rate providing a brilliant platform to pick up results.

Moyes just gets the club and the fanbase, and this has helped him to excel.
