Everton suffered a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby on Saturday afternoon.

David Moyes’ side actually played really well after Liverpool raced into a two-goal lead, so it was a game decided by a poor start from the visitors.

Hugo Ekitike admitted he found it tough playing against Everton, so it shows how far they’ve come since the Sean Dyche era.

Moyes and Jack Grealish were raging after the game as they were seen remonstrating with the referee Darren England.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, the Scotsman said something ‘very strange’ happened.

David Moyes baffled by the lack of stoppage time in Merseyside derby

Moyes vented his frustration to the media after the game about the three minutes that were added on at the end.

“I think three minutes (stoppage time) was very strange (and) we’ve been playing a couple of teams who’ve taken quick free-kicks in the games and they’ve caught us out.

“But today, every quick free-kick had to be stopped and brought back for the whistle. And then we got a booking for it.

“I find it quite unbelievable. They’re talking about trying to keep the game quick.”

Had the Toffees had more stoppage time, there would’ve been an opportunity to snatch a late equaliser, like James Tarkowski did back in April.

David Moyes pleased with second-half performance

Despite a poor start to the game, shipping two goals in the first half an hour, Everton were a lot better in the second half and Moyes thought they were deserving of a point.

“I’ll look at the first half and I’ll start myself first of all and see if we should have done something different and better than we did do,” the Scotsman explained.

“But look, great credit, it was a bit more like Everton in the second half, a bit more like us.

“Look, I don’t think anybody would have probably turned and said, ‘hey, you didn’t deserve it’, if we got back into the game, but I think we just gave ourselves probably a little bit of a task too far by going two down.”

Everton are back in action on Wednesday evening, as they take on Wolverhampton Wanderers in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
