Everton suffered a 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby.

David Moyes’ side gave away two early goals, and it was always going to be a tough task to overturn that deficit.

However, Everton got back in it through Idrissa Gana Gueye just before the hour mark, as he thundered home a superb right-footed strike.

Ultimately, Liverpool saw out the win and there were scenes at full-time from the away side that spoke volumes.

What Jack Grealish and David Moyes did after Liverpool defeat

At the full-time whistle, Jack Grealish and Moyes went straight over to the officials as they were clearly infuriated by a few decisions.

“Everton’s frustrations boil over after the final whistle with Moyes remonstrating against referee England and Grealish booked for something he said – or perhaps he took a free kick too quickly in the previous 90,” Sky Sports reporter Pete Gill wrote.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had to push Grealish away to avoid him picking up a second yellow and a red card.

They were likely arguing that the first goal shouldn’t have stood, as Iliman Ndiaye looked to be fouled before Ryan Gravenberch opened the scoring.

Ally McCoist says David Moyes should be proud

For years, Everton have been miles apart from Liverpool in terms of the Premier League table, but heading into this one, the gap was a lot closer.

Despite losing, it was very clear Moyes’ side have improved significantly and TNT pundit Ally McCoist thinks the Toffees boss should be proud.

“Liverpool came flying out of the traps, got a couple of wonderful goals, and then after that Everton come back into it,” McCoist explained.

“When Moyes goes back in and has a cup of tea he will be proud of his boys.”

Everton are back in action on Tuesday, as they travel to Molineux to face Wolves in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
