David Moyes suggests he cannot trust £16m Everton player

With Everton now at the point of the season where futures are considered, David Moyes might be against the prospect of retaining one player.

Moyes has clearly done a thorough assessment of the Everton squad in his first three months in charge.

The Scotsman can clearly see where improvements are needed but chose to wait for the summer as Moyes saved Everton’s money.

But now he can utilise the resources he has as The Friedkin Group are set to not be shy with their funds.

There is one clear position Moyes could improve after his comments over one player, in a major warning.

David Moyes hints he doesn’t trust Nathan Patterson at Everton

It’s been a difficult career for Nathan Patterson at Everton.

The Scottish right-back hasn’t exactly got a strong run of games which is no fault of his own due to injuries.

But Moyes asked Patterson to step up, which he seemingly hasn’t done in his minimal game time.

James Tarkowski’s injury has brought up a problem for Moyes ahead of their meeting with Chelsea, as Jake O’Brien might have to play centre-back.

This means after he has played so well at right-back, a spot will be free, but Moyes might be reluctant to put Patterson in after recent comments in his pre-match press conference.

“It could weaken the side down the right (if O’Brien moves),” Moyes said.

“He’s done the role well, he’s not made us more open.

“To move him can be a problem, it looks like he’ll have the opportunity to play centre-back.”

Everton should sell Patterson in the summer

It’s a big claim, but probably one that needs to be said.

Since Patterson arrived from Rangers for £16m in 2022, it’s been difficult for him on Merseyside.

Although he seems like a brilliant character around the dressing room, the 23-year-old has only amassed 47 league appearances in three seasons, which averages out to just over 15 a season.

This could send a message to Moyes as not only is the full-back unreliable through fitness, Patterson hasn’t exactly shown his best so far this season.

Patterson wanted to leave under Sean Dyche, and his fortunes don’t appear to be changing under Moyes anytime soon.

The fact he’s consistently played O’Brien out of position speaks volumes and Patterson’s future could be in serious doubt.
