Kevin Thelwell’s legacy has mixed opinions at Everton but he’s no doubt kept the club going.

David Moyes hasn’t had long with Thelwell and won’t do so in the future, but the Scotsman will know the part he’s played in the last few seasons.

Thelwell will join Rangers next season in what will be a new challenge for the soon-to-be former Everton director of football.

But the challenges he had to overcome with the Toffees are unmatched, as Everton fans praised Thelwell.

They’ll praise him even more, as it’s become clear that a decision he made a few summers back has ultimately saved Everton.

Michael Ball praises Kevin Thelwell for £60m Everton decision

Evertonians do give Thelwell credit where it’s due, as after implications with the Premier League, he’s managed the club effectively.

It seems as though he’s leaving when The Friedkin Group are making Everton have the strongest transfer window for a long time.

But this can’t overlook the decisions the director of football has made, with Thelwell signing Illiman Ndiaye proving to be brilliant.

Ndiaye has seemed like the parting gift from Thelwell this season, but another decision he made not long ago has been praised by former Everton defender Michael Ball.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Ball believes Thelwell’s decision to sell Richarlison has gone under the radar, claiming it’s ‘saved’ Everton.

“Take for example Richarlison. We sold him to Spurs for £60 million and a lot of Evertonians felt we should have got more for a guy who was Brazil’s No. 9,” Ball said.

“We paid roughly the same fee when he arrived from Watford, and most fans expected a bigger profit.

“Looking back, it was that £60m that pretty much saved the football club.”

Thelwell’s Everton decision will look even better with Richarlison move this summer

With the Brazilian leaving the club for £60m, it’s proven to be a steal.

Tottenham fans want Richarlison sold and want to recoup their losses in what is a deal that hasn’t worked out for them.

Looking back, it’s astonishing that Thelwell got that fee for the striker, and the fact that fans were asking for more speaks volumes.

It’s become clear Evertonians want the club to take the opportunity to re-sign the 27-year-old, as The Friedkins could bid £30m for Richarlison.

This makes Thelwell look like a genius, and if Tottenham don’t win the Europa League, they won’t have much of a leg to stand on with the Toffees currently above them in this mad Premier League season.

With Rangers fans getting excited at the prospect of Thelwell, this is something that will heighten their joy.

The time seems right for his Everton departure, but Thelwell deserves credit if success comes the Toffees’ way in the future.
