Everton now have to turn their focus back to Premier League action on the weekend with Arsenal visiting Goodison Park on Saturday.
Wednesday evening provided plenty of controversy at Anfield as David Moyes saw his dreadful record continue on the other side of Stanley Park.
James Tarkowski was fortunate not to be red-carded for his challenge on Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister in the opening minutes of the game.
But that was not the only controversial decision made by the officials.
Mark Clattenburg thinks Liverpool’s goal was actually offside, with Luis Diaz intervening with Tarkowski’s decision-making.
Everton tasted defeat on the night at Anfield and there will be some who feel the officials played their role in the loss.
However, what is now set to happen with the man who was in charge of VAR will leave many at Everton furious.

Paul Tierney to be rewarded with Manchester Derby after Everton debacle
Arne Slot empathised with Everton after the Premier League scheduling has them playing again on Saturday lunchtime.
But it is the scheduling of VAR operator Paul Tierney for this weekend’s round of games which is causing a lot of frustration.
On Sunday, Tierney is set to take up the VAR operation back at Stockley Park for the Manchester Derby being held at Old Trafford.
‘So VAR Paul Tierney who failed to advise the referee to visit the monitor to view that Red card challenge by the Everton player. Rewarded by PGMOL for his huge error – appointed Manchester Derby,’ said former Premier League referee Keith Hackett.
So, despite a complete horror show of a performance from the experienced official, the Premier League are rewarding him with the biggest game of the weekend.
Moyes will surely be left absolutely baffled by the decision following the two major calls which Tierney failed to get right at Anfield.
The PGMOL admitted Tierney got Tarkowski’s tackle wrong, but there has been no word about Diaz being offside.
To reward a referee for his poor display will feel like a real slap in the face for those at Goodison.

What Jamie Carragher said about Paul Tierney
There is a real frustration surrounding the use of VAR and the lack of consistency in the decisions being made across the board.
Everton were furious with their penalty being overturned against Manchester United just a matter of weeks ago.
But now the officials are unable to see Tarkowski’s challenge was a clear red card – albeit that went in Everton’s favour.
And Jamie Carragher was also perplexed that an experienced official like Tierney was unable to see Tarkowski’s challenge for what it was.
“It’s a shocking tackle, we know it should be a red card, it’s not really going to be up for debate,” said Carragher on Wednesday night.
“The referee should give it on the pitch. For Paul Tierney not to give it on VAR is shocking.”
