Dwight McNeil has gone from strength to strength since making the move to Everton, and he’s now shared what actually led to him making the decision to move.

Everton signed Dwight McNeil from Burnley for around £20 million back in 2022.

The Toffees have certainly got their money’s worth, as he’s already scored 14 goals and provided 12 assists in 88 games, which is seven more goals in 59 fewer games than at Burnley.

No offence to Burnley, but McNeil has gone from playing at Turf Moor to now being labelled as a potential Barcelona and Real Madrid level player.

Interestingly, when speaking to the club recently, McNeil revealed what actually led to him making the decision to move to Goodison Park.

The Burnley experience that made Dwight McNeil want to join Everton

Dwight McNeil is still only 24 years of age with his best years ahead of him.

The fact that he’s just coming into his own and discovering a potential new position is extremely exciting, as the weekend’s display could be a sign of things to come.

Theo Walcott has already identified McNeil as a player who will be the key to Everton’s season.

Interestingly, when speaking to the club, the winger shared what actually made him choose to join.

Everton shared the interview and he’s what he had to say.

“I love playing for Everton,” he says. “Make no mistake, this is a massive club – and that’s why I wanted to join in the first place.

“Playing against them, I got a sense for that and it was always horrible as an opposition player but you could see what it was about!

“Who wouldn’t want to play for a massive club like this? There’s a lot of pressure playing here but I enjoy that. I just want to improve myself, get even better and help the team more and more.

“As we know, in football anything can happen and, unfortunately, in the past few years, things have happened to us – most recently out of our control as players – but I would never change my decision if I could turn back time, even knowing how things have unfolded.

“I’m really enjoying my time here and I’m definitely confident the best is yet to come.”

Everton’s record against Burnley before Dwight McNeil joined

Everton won 3-1 at Goodison Park prior to McNeil’s departure from Burnley, which is perhaps the game that really stuck in the mind ahead of his move.

Burnley got the last laugh prior to his move though, as they came out on top in a 3-2 win at Turf Moor.

The winger played eight games against Everton prior to his move to Goodison Park, winning on three occasions, drawing once and losing four times.

During this period he scored just the one goal against the Toffees.
