Everton 2024 summer target has just become a record-breaker – and may soon become a league champion

Everton have ended up having a decent season all things considered.

The first half of the campaign was very poor under Sean Dyche, but thankfully he departed just when things started to get really bad.

Dyche informed The Friedkin Group he’d taken Everton as far as he could. And that forced the new owners to act – initially, they were going to give Dyche a bit more time.

David Moyes came in and guided the club to safety, and now a big summer lies in wait.

It will be important for Everton to act decisively this summer, which is perhaps something the club didn’t do last year.

That said, the club were still in a tricky spot financially and with PSR.

Everton were ultimately unable to sign several players – and one has absolutely flourished in Scott McTominay.

After joining Manchester United at the age of five, McTominay left Old Trafford in 2024 to sign for Italian giants Napoli.

It was perhaps something of a left-field move.

Everton were one of a few clubs showing interest in McTominay, as it became clear he would not be staying put with the Red Devils.

But it was Napoli who won the race, paying United just over £25 million to seal the deal.

And McTominay has made that fee look an absolute bargain this season, and has performed in a way to suggest that Everton really missed out.

On Sunday, Napoli beat Torino 2-0 in Serie A, with McTominay scoring both goals. This victory sent three points clear at the top of the league, with four games left to play.

McTominay has become the first Scottish midfielder ever to score over 10 goals in a single Serie A campaign.

And with 11 strikes, this is now the most prolific season by a Scottish player in Serie A, surpassing the 10 scored by Denis Law for Torino in 1961/62.

Goal-shy Everton missed a trick not signing McTominay

Perhaps a move for McTominay wasn’t too realistic in the end for Everton, given the free he ultimately transferred for.

But McTominay really does look to be a player the Toffees missed out on, if indeed there was interest.

Everton have several signed players from United over the years but couldn’t nab the Scot – and the club’s loss is very much Napoli’s gain.

McTominay is now said to be adored by the Napoli fans according to the Guardian. The same publication suggests that if the season ended now with Napoli as champions, McTominay could win the the ‘Uomo Scudetto‘ – Player of a Title-Winning Season.

McTominay has certainly developed into a top goalscoring midfielder and given Everton’s issues in the final third this term, it’s a shame the Toffees could not do a deal.
