Everton fans could have told the mainstream media months before January rolled around that it was going to be a quiet one.
However, few would have predicted just how profound the punishments enforced upon them would be on the rest of the Premier League, with a mere pittance having been offloaded between the 20 sides.
Given this time last year a total of £815m was expended, this marks a dire downturn in spending.
However, Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell’s silence was always predicted, with the latter actively coming out and warning Evertonians that it was unlikely they would spend much at all.
Well, after an entire month of rumours and speculation, the 52-year-old manager now feels necessary to clarify once again if and why there was to be no spending, with just two days left of the window.
What Sean Dyche said about Everton’s transfers
Speaking in his press conference in the run-up to Tuesday’s trip to Fulham, the bulk of the questions focused on the unending negativity faced.
After all, it feels like Goodison Park has been permanently encased in a dark cloud in recent years, swirling around and disturbing any positivity that might have crept through its defences.
Managing to quickly expunge it, the fanbase then returns to normalcy. A permanent state of anxiety.
And as someone who seeks to be forthright and open whenever possible, Dyche has now made a concerted effort to affirm what most should already have known. There will likely be no business conducted this month.
He noted: ‘I’d be surprised if it wasn’t pleasantly [quiet].

‘Joking apart, the window’s been very quiet so far. There might be a flurry at the end but is it around £40m spent? Which is pretty unheard of, and I don’t know what that’s to do with.
‘It might be to do with the ten points and everyone’s going oh we might have to put the breaks on here, I don’t know. But there seems to be a reason why it’s slow and our part in that, it’s unlikely I’d suggest that we’re going to add to that.
‘It is what it is, there’s no point in me crying it in. There’s no way of changing it, it’s highly unlikely that there’s funds available to change it so we keep working with the players we’ve got, we keep pushing them as hard as we can without taking them too far.’
Who are Everton interested in this January?
As aforementioned, this seemingly obvious notion has been ignored by a whole host of outlets.
Most recently has the club been linked with a loan swoop for Chuba Akpom, with that report emerging mere hours after Frank Onyeka was another touted for a temporary switch.

The theme here, and what clearly makes them plausible enough to publish, is that Everton would not have to offload a huge sum to acquire them.
Other key names touted were Jake O’Brien, Adam Wharton and Said Benrahma, but all would command fees too high for Dyche to justify. He will have to make do with what he’s got, and pray it’s enough.
