Everton have been linked with a move for free-agent Jesse Lingard with a short-term deal being eyed to provide backup.
The January transfer window is open and for Everton, that likely won’t mean too much given the clubs are still required to be careful financially.
A 10-point deduction earlier this campaign left the Toffees in a precarious situation despite a strong response which included a run of four consecutive victories (Nottingham Forest, Newcastle United, Chelsea and Burnley).
Following that run things have gone slightly pear-shaped, with three consecutive losses in the league which has raised questions over Sean Dyche (Tottenham Hotspurs, Manchester City and Wolves).
Due to the poor run, some additions in January are wanted and these are more than likely to be cheap and or loan arrivals. This makes the reported move for Jesse Lingard make sense.

Jesse Lingard could be handed an Everton contract
According to talkSPORT, Everton are considering offering Lingard a short-term deal in January. The move would see the 32-cap England international end his seven-month unemployed spell.
The Goodison Park outfit wouldn’t be able to offer Lingard a massive wage packet due to their financial constraints but would be able to offer him the chance to once again play in the Premier League.
The link however has been cast into doubt by Alan Myers who has admitted on X he doesn’t think the move will happen.
He replied to a fan, saying “No, from what I understand”.
Dyche has previously slammed Lingard
Although interest in the England international now seems to be possible – there was a time in which Dyche wasn’t fond of Lingard, which makes a move rather surprising.
Back in 2019 – Lingard was playing for Manchester United and Dyche was the Burnley boss. The then-United forward won a penalty which Dyche perceived as very soft, prompting this response from Everton’s manager as reported by TNT Sports.
“I just don’t like it when there’s a touch on the shoulder and their legs don’t work, but it’s modern football. I’m not saying he does it all the time. But they’re strong these lads and how come their legs don’t work I don’t know.”
This however was five years ago which tells us it’s long in the past for Dyche who will take all the reinforcements he can get as Everton remain trapped financially in January.
