Everton fans are all saying the same about David Moyes’ future after his bizarre Newcastle verdict

Everton fans weren’t best pleased with David Moyes after their 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Newcastle United on Saturday evening.

But comments from their gaffer after the annihilation on the River Mersey will have set further alarm bells ringing among the Hill Dickinson Stadium faithful.

Everton went 3-0 down at half-time against Newcastle, with Malick Thiaw, Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade putting the Toffees to the sword and denying them a chance of a place in the Premier League’s top half.

But it was the comments made by David Moyes at the end of the game that will have angered the Toffees support – and some have taken to Twitter to vent their frustration at the Scot’s defeatist attitude.

Everton fans are all in agreement that David Moyes is defeatist after Newcastle comments

Speaking after the loss, Moyes stated that Everton aren’t at Newcastle’s level, claiming that Eddie Howe’s men would ‘have to have had an off night’, alongside Everton having a ‘good night’, for them to get a result.

However, with Newcastle having failed to win away from home all season in the Premier League, Everton fans have not taken kindly to that comment.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), one fan kicked off the negative views, stating: “This is an AWFUL quote. Awful. Might as well give up then David because Everton aren’t at the same level as loads of teams in the league”, while another said: “Disgrace of a quote”.

A third user wrote: “Look, at the start of the season, with them being a Champions League side I’d get it. Right now? Being above them at the start of the game? And their away record being in the toilet? That’s not a good quote…”, whilst another kept it short and simple, posting: “Please shut up Moyes.”

Struggling to think of a worse performance under David Moyes

However, some fans took it to the next level – stating that Moyes shouldn’t be kept on once his contract runs out. One fan published: “They hadn’t won away all season. Proper loser mentality that. I said the other week he can’t go past his two year contract and statements like that are the main reason why. Martinez had his faults but he raised the expectations of the whole club with his attitude”.

Whilst another wrote: “Seen the best and worst of Moyes/this team this week. Can’t excuse these comments though, it’s such a loser mentality and not what we need in the long term.”

Further adding to the pile, a third fan wrote: “Surely he hasn’t said this. Mark my words 100% Moyes will be gone in the summer. 100 percent”, whilst a final fan summarised the comments by stating that Moyes’ attitude doesn’t resonate with Evertonians, posting: “Should be gone just for that take if he is serious. Defeatist attitude has no place at our club.”

Moyes’ side are good underdogs when they want to be but against sides who are challenging down at the bottom half, it’s not a good look – especially with stats showing Newcastle worked harder.

David Moyes’ contract could see him depart Everton at the end of next season

Everton handed David Moyes a two-and-a-half-year deal upon his arrival in January, and although he set off superbly at Goodison Park and managed the transition into the Hill Dickinson Stadium well, the Scot still only sees Everton sit in 14th.

There is still a lot of work to do, although there is every hope that Moyes can drag the Toffees into the top half by the end of the season, if he can get his team firing on a consistent basis.

Moyes is only 62 years of age, and has been in footballing management for close to 30 years. His nous and knowledge is more than enough to keep Everton competitive, though it’s unlikely to see Everton become overly competitive in the coming seasons when it comes to titles.

With that in mind, and with The Friedkin Group likely to be ambitious, it could see Moyes replaced once his contract expires – especially with the American having replaced Paulo Fonseca with footballing legend Jose Mourinho after two years at the helm at Roma.

If that is anything to go by, there could be change in 18 months’ time.
