Kevin Thelwell has just announced that he will be leaving Everton at the end of the season.
Since the Friedkin Group completed their Everton takeover in December, Kevin Thelwell’s position has been under scrutiny.
The sporting director has been rumoured to depart for months and now Thelwell has just confirmed that he will be leaving upon the expiry of his contract this summer.
Thelwell has overseen one of the most difficult periods of the football club’s history and as such, he’s come under a lot of criticism.
With that said, Everton fans have taken to X, formerly known as Twitter, to react to Thelwell’s exit.

Everton fans heap praise on Kevin Thelwell
Whilst Thelwell hasn’t always been popular, he now leaves on good terms with Everton fans as they heaped praise on the job he’s done following his exit announcement.
“Of course some mistakes have been made, but I think Kevin Thelwell has done a good job in extremely difficult circumstances. Great statement. Wish him all the best for the future,” @HJWatkinson posted.
@WayneSmyth6 commented: “I think the job he’s done has been underappreciated. Tarnished in many respects by Dyche’s failure to make best use of the players he bought.”
“He’s very unlucky not to get a fair crack with financial backing. Done a great job under horrendous circumstances,” @efcwakes added.
@DavidHoward5 said: “He did a crucial job for the club in the most difficult of circumstances. Wish him well for the future, he always came across well in interviews – one of the many good people at Everton who kept focus throughout the chaos.”
“A gentleman. Thanks for a job well done and best wishes for whatever comes next,” @Wakanaidreaming posted.
@Stevewalmo1 said: “He did extremely well, considering he was pushing water uphill for most, if not all of his tenure.”
Everton could move for Dan Ashworth
The process of identifying Thelwell’s successor is already well underway, though, they’ve already taken a knockback.
David Weir has snubbed Everton’s interest as he wants to remain on the south coast with Brighton and Hove Albion.
Now, the Toffees could turn their attention to Dan Ashworth, who is available after leaving Manchester United at the end of last year.
Ashworth is widely regarded as one of the best sporting directors in the country.
