Michael Keane’s contract actually expires tomorrow.
Michael Keane was set to become a free agent, and there were talks that Wrexham were trying to land his signature.
However, it’s now emerged that David Moyes has restarted talks to extend Keane’s deal, as he wants to allocate funds elsewhere rather than having to sign a replacement.
The former England international did feature more regularly under Moyes towards the end of last season as he started in the final day win against Newcastle United.
So, quite clearly, the Scotsman trusts him and here’s how Everton fans have reacted to the news.

Everton fans content with keeping Michael Keane
Keane hasn’t always been a trusted defender among supporters, but he did show signs of improvement under Moyes.
So, reacting to the contract news, fans are pretty content, as long as he remains a backup option.
“As much as I disliked him, he showed significant improvement under Moyes,” @leadline84 admitted.
“I’m more than happy to keep him as a squad player. We do need backup at centre half and it saves a fee. Makes sense,” @scouseMike81 said.
@Louis1878EFC explained: “He’s only ever going to be 4th choice. Makes sense; we’d get no one better for that role.”
@Stephen26028312 noted: “I think Moyes will get the best out of him.”
“It just makes perfect sense to keep him. If we got rid we’d have to spend money on another centre back who’s willing to be 3rd/4th choice and that’s not an easy task,” @Noberts1878 added.
Keane can still be a valuable member of Everton’s squad
Of course, Keane isn’t going to be a regular starter for Everton, but he can still be a really valued member of the squad next season.
After all, the 32-year-old is one of the best goalscoring defenders in the Premier League, so he’ll be of use in the final throes of games in both boxes.
Keane has scored a remarkable 36 goals during his career, including three in just 11 league starts last term.
Saving on a replacement could allow Everton to sign a better forward, which is an area that certainly needs addressing.
