Many question why Everton fans retain an overwhelming disdain for Anthony Gordon, but it takes little time to explain the situation.
During the club’s darkest hour, as they stared down almost certain relegation in January 2023, he was quick to turn his back.
Yes, a vocal minority of fans had chased his car down after one particularly poor display, and that was wrong, but such fury had been brought about after the 23-year-old had already made clear his displeasure with missing out on a move to Chelsea, downing tools and scoring just three goals in half a season.
He did little to save the club, as some would argue, and then went on strike, refusing to show up for training.
And yet, Evertonians are expected to now respect him as he shines for Newcastle United? Jamie Carragher certainly thinks so.
Everton fans fume at Jamie Carragher’s Anthony Gordon defence
Taking to X just last night, the former Liverpool captain was once again on the wind-up, seeking to anger Evertonians over an innocuous social media post from the club.
Carragher reacted to Everton’s video mocking Gordon for missing his penalty by writing: ‘Local lad who came through your academy, helped keep you up under Lampard, wanted out because the club was a shambles on & off the pitch & who you then sold for 40M. The Peoples Club!’
Well, this has hardly gone down well, and has swiftly been refuted by the entire fanbase who have all found the perfect counter-argument…
One fan account, Mighty Blues, argued: ‘Refused to turn up to work despite being paid tens of thousands of pounds a week to do so in order to force a move. Stop trying to create a narrative because your bosses at Sky have told you to Jamie.’
Another supporter would then question why Everton aren’t allowed to have a joke: ‘Some people just want Everton to be a punching bag joke forever & when they start giving it back, other people start crying about it. What’s any of this got to do with Carragher anyway? A comedy noise over the lad missing a penalty & you’d think we’d done something awful.’
Everton twisted into monsters over lighthearted joke
It’s ridiculous how people can take something so small and lighthearted and turn it into a joke, especially without context.
At half-time, as Goodison Park desperately sought some alternative entertainment after a busy first half which somehow remained scoreless, two lads entered the field to take on the crossbar challenge in front of the Gwladys Street End.

Neither would strike the woodwork with their three efforts each, but in a new feature, the Family Fortunes buzzer rang throughout the stadium to poke fun at each failed attempt.
This was all that the social media post relating to Gordon’s penalty miss was in relation to, and yet some people are just so desperate to spin the narrative in an outwardly negative way.
Carragher should keep his questionable opinions about Evertonians to himself, as it took no time at all for the entire fanbase to prove him wrong.
