Everton fans told ‘clumsy’ £26m man still has big role to play under Sean Dyche

Everton face Newcastle tonight with the knowledge that a win could lift them out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Everton have made quick work of bouncing back from their 10-point deduction over the last few weeks, with solid displays leaving them two points from safety.

However, if The Toffees are to continue to improve and get better, they’ll need one of their strikers to start firing in the goals.

In particular, £25.75m summer signing Beto will be expected to play a key role in the remainder of this season with Dominick Calvert-Lewin not quite living up to expectations, and struggling at times with injury.

Beto hasn’t been too great thus far but now Joe Thomas has backed him to play a massive role in the coming months.

Beto backed to play a huge role

Writing in the Liverpool Echo, Thomas has praised the ‘clumsy’ looking Beto and predicted he will improve at Goodison Park.

“He looked clumsy at times on Saturday evening but that is to be expected for a player who has been out of the team for so long. But he did not lack heart, energy or desire and while he may not be as clinical as Calvert-Lewin, that isn’t the priority for Everton.

“Sean Dyche, with this small squad, has one set of effective tactics – there is a Plan A but little scope for alternatives. And for his approach to work, a striker who occupies centre-backs, causes a nuisance and brings the midfielders behind him into play is essential.

“That striker scoring goals is a bonus if he can bring Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Jack Harrison into the game, which Beto did.

“This time last season, the backup was Neal Maupay. It is little wonder his career on Merseyside has not been a success.

“With Beto, DCL is no longer under the same pressure for a quick return because the summer signing maintains the integrity of Dyche’s plan.”

Beto could be key for Sean Dyche

If Beto can discover the form he’s shown previously while with Udinese particularly last season, he could be a valuable asset for Dyche.

Last season he managed 10 goals in Serie A while playing 33 times which given he played 2131 minutes, equals a goal every 213 minutes.

Ideally, Beto and Calvert-Lewin will both be among the goals which almost certainly would see Everton rising up the table.
