Maupay aims a dig at Everton fans for his miserable Goodison Park spell

Toffees flop Maupay has now aimed a dig at the Everton fanbase about his miserable spell at Goodison Park. The 27-year-old claims the Toffees fans showed him a lack of support during his spell on Merseyside. So, it helped to cause the striker to struggle for form all last season.

Maupay joined Everton in a £15m transfer from Brighton & Hove Albion as a last-ditch target under Frank Lampard in August 2022. But despite opening his account to secure a 1-0 win at home to West Ham United days later, the Frenchman failed to score again across 32 outings.

Everton saw enough, or rather not enough, from Maupay last season to send him on loan to Brentford for this term. He has played seven games in the Premier League for the Bees so far and scored a goal against West Ham. Yet Maupay has seemingly not forgiven Everton’s fans.

“As a striker, you need confidence,” Maupay has told Sky Sports about his time with Everton. “You need to score goals and I didn’t. I scored in my second game at Goodison and I thought it could be a good season. But for multiple reasons, it didn’t work out.

“I didn’t play much but when I was on the pitch, I wasn’t the best version of myself. I didn’t find my best form. I’m always honest and tell the truth; last season, I didn’t enjoy myself.

“I didn’t enjoy my football and life up there was tough. The people around the club, the fans, made my life really difficult.”

Everton fans plan a protest against the Premier League’s points deduction

Everton fan group The 1878 is now planning a major protest against the 10-point deduction the Premier League has issued. The Toffees were docked points last Friday after the league’s independent commission upheld a charge against the club for breaking financial regulations.

The Premier League initially charged Everton with breaking its financial sustainability rules in March. Top-flight clubs are allowed to make losses of up to £105m over a three-year period. But Everton penned losses of £124.5m between the 2019/20 and 2021/22 accounting years.

Now, The 1878 has confirmed that its members will be protesting against the penalty when Everton host Manchester United. The Red Devils visit Goodison Park this Sunday evening in the Merseysiders’ first Premier League fixture since the penalty and the international break.

Barcelona could now eye the transfer of Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure after losing Gavi to an injury. That is according to the Cadena Ser show ‘El Bar’, which implies the Camp Nou outfit may explore the 30-year-old’s services to give Xavi an experienced replacement.

Gavi will now miss the rest of this season and potentially Euro 2024 after tearing his ACL and suffering an associated injury to the lateral meniscus. He suffered the blow as Spain won 3-1 against Georgia. Xavi had played the 19-year-old in 15 of Barcelona’s 17 fixtures this season.
