Everton had been closing in on a blockbuster end to the summer window, seeking to snag a midfielder and a winger to finish things off in style.
Sean Dyche had been tempted back into the market after their dire start to the new Premier League campaign, and sent Kevin Thelwell out with a few key names in mind.
Already Everton are working on signing Ernest Nuamah from Lyon, as the dynamic winger that they have craved for some time, just after they reportedly completed another deal with the French club.
However, it seems that despite agreeing terms with Lyon, the player’s plans will play a huge role in this grandstand finish, with Orel Mangala now set to make a huge decision on his future.
Everton target Orel Mangala makes decision on his future
The man to provide this information is Sky journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, who has taken to X to offer some much-needed clarity on this situation.
It’s quite alarming that this seems to be coming to such a dramatic conclusion, especially given it was noted that Orel Mangala was set for his Everton medical earlier this week.

However, as we have seen before, nothing is ever set in stone with the Toffees, with Arnaut Danjuma the prime example of how things can turn on a knife edge.
Now, the journalist has confirmed what Mangala’s plans are, as Fiorentina emerged from the shadows to try and hijack the deal.
He writes, seeking to confirm : ‘Mangala has chosen the Viola. #Lione has accepted the loan, waiting for the OK. However, Everton does not give up @SkySport.’
Everton must now rush for an Orel Mangala alternative
Whilst it was petrifying to see a deal threaten fall through, Thelwell cannot sit around feeling sorry for himself.
After all, there is still ample time to source an alternative, with Everton’s interest in Sofyan Amrabat one potential route they could now explore.
It’d be hugely ironic to then take Fiorentina’s unwanted talent after they had just snagged Mangala from their clutches.
What’s even more frustrating is how perfect he would have been for the Toffees, with Belgian media claiming he was a ‘true organiser’ and an ‘exceptional’ player.
Deadline day is often a panicked, awkward day, and for Evertonians, it promises excitement but almost always brings pain.
Recent years have been particularly underwhelming, with efforts made to improve the squad, often to no avail.
However, as it creeps nearer, this feels like it could be one of their most important in years.

After all, the squad has been suitably bolstered, and would likely do just fine throughout the season without any last-minute additions.
But, to add two new faces in key positions might be that crucial difference that propels them even further up the Premier League table.
