A round-up of the latest Everton news as Newcastle United target a transfer for Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana issues an honest verdict on his Goodison Park future.

Newcastle target Branthwaite’s transfer from Everton

Newcastle are looking to raid Everton for the second time in a year and secure a transfer for Branthwaite. That is according to Football Transfers, which reports that Magpies boss Eddie Howe believes the 21-year-old is perfect and can be a long-term successor for Fabian Schar.

The St James’ Park hierarchy agrees with Howe, as well, that Branthwaite would match their plans perfectly. Newcastle believe the Carlisle native is the ideal centre-back to play next to Kieran Trippier. Howe is also pushing the Toon to secure a deal as soon as the January sales.

Everton star Branthwaite would be keen to join Newcastle if the two teams can agree on the terms of a transfer. But the two clubs are yet to open formal negotiations about a move that would reunite him with Anthony Gordon. The winger joined the Toon this January for £45m.

Onana issues an honest verdict on his Everton future

Everton midfielder Onana has now issued an honest verdict on his long-term future with the Toffees. The 22-year-old has been a pivotal part of manager Sean Dyche’s side at Goodison Park. He has started all 11 available Premier League fixtures from their 12 so far this season.

Onana has further started each of the Blues’ three Carabao Cup ties, in which he has offered one goal and one assist. The nine-cap Belgium international also started 29 of Everton’s top-flight fixtures last season. Frank Lampard signed Onana for £33m from Lille in August 2022.

Now, Onana – who has a contract on Merseyside until June 2027 – has revealed that teams targeted his transfer this summer. But the midfielder wanted to remain loyal to Everton and develop at Goodison Park with Onana setting his sights on becoming the best Toffees player.

“Clubs came knocking,” Onana told TransferMarkt about the interest in his transfer. “But I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best.”

He continued: “Everton gave me the chance to play my first games in the Premier League. I want to repay that. I can only do that if I do my best and show good performances”

Everton manager Dyche has given James Garner a challenge to improve in one key area at Finch Farm. The coach appreciates how the midfielder demands a lot from himself with his drive to constantly get better. But he still sees scope for the 22-year-old to refine his talents.

“Players these days have got it all there, it’s all in front of you,” Dyche said, via quotes by the Liverpool Echo. “We can only guide them to where they want to go. It’s up to them and he’s showing signs he wants to grip it.

“That’s really pleasing to see him do it. I want him to do the hard yards and the basics of being a midfield player. But I want him to play and have the freedom to play and he’s finding that nice mix.”
