Everton look set to miss out on Manchester City teenager Shea Charles who is now close to a move to Southampton.

The 19-year-old who has been considered the next Gareth Barry by some Man City fans, will travel to the south coast this weekend for a medical ahead of a £9m deal.

That is according to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, who took to Twitter to report the latest transfer news as the summer window gathers pace.

Romano tweeted: “Excl: Southampton are closing in on deal to sign Man City 2003 born midfielder Shea Charles. Manchester City will receive £9m fee – it will also include buy back clause and sell on clause for #MCFC.

Charles will travel this weekend for medical if all goes to plan.”

Everton are once again too slow after showing interest in Shea Charles

Everton were linked with a move for the teenager back in May as per the Belfast Telegraph, as were German sides Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

The 19-year-old defensive midfielder was named on the bench by Pep Guardiola for Manchester City’s final game of the season against Brentford, replacing Nathan Ake in the second half.

Indeed, the youngster is highly rated, and it is no surprise that City have implemented a buy back clause in Charles’ contract with Southampton.

A comparison to Gareth Barry is high praise indeed, and both Everton and Manchester City fans will be familiar with the former England international’s influence as a midfielder.

Barry moved to Goodison Park from Manchester City back in 2013 on a season-long loan deal, before making the switch permanent the following summer on a free transfer.

Making 131 Premier League appearances for the Blues until his move to West Brom in 2017, Barry is widely respected by Everton fans and no doubt the club could do with a stabilising midfield presence such as his at the minute.
