Everton aren’t considered a selling club, but they have struggled to retain their best players over the years.

Especially in the 21st century, Everton have operated on a transfer model that often sees their best players depart.

They’ve also been forced into sales due to the Financial Fair Play issues, which were prominent towards the end of Farhad Moshiri’s tenure.

In fact, three out of their five most expensive sales came within the period when they were trying to raise cash to avoid a points deduction.

Everton’s most expensive sales as Romelu Lukaku tops the list

Everton’s most expensive sale came back in the summer of 2017, when Manchester United slapped down £75m to sign Romelu Lukaku.

Lukaku had just come off the back of a 25-goal season in the Premier League, with only Harry Kane scoring more, so he was considered a world-class striker at the time.

Coming in at second place is Richarlison, who left in 2022 to join Tottenham Hotspur. That was a sale that was somewhat forced upon the club due to PSR issues.

Amadou Onana, who is the most recent sale on this list, comes in at third place, following his £50m exit to Aston Villa last year.

John Stones and Anthony Gordon complete the list, with both English talents commanding fees in excess of £40m.

Gordon’s fee was pure profit, as he came through the academy at Finch Farm.

John Stones went on to have the best career

Out of those aforementioned five players, Stones probably went on to have the most successful career after leaving Everton.

Stones became one of the best defenders in the world for a time and has won multiple Premier League titles and the Champions League at Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola turned the former Toffees centre-back into a centre-defensive midfielder in certain games, most notably in the Champions League final against Inter Milan.

Lukaku has also enjoyed a good career, although he was moved on by Man United after just two seasons at Old Trafford.
