Everton are being made to rue their missed opportunity to sign Denzel Dumfries.

Back in 2021, Everton earmarked Dumfries as a target at right-back, but manager Rafael Benitez passed on the opportunity.

Fast forward to the current date and Everton are still struggling in that position, with David Moyes keen to sign a new right-back over the summer.

How would you feel about Hayden Hackney becoming Everton’s first signing? 🤩

All of that could have been avoided had Everton just signed Dumfries, who is now set to join Real Madrid.

Sean Dyche wanted Everton to sign Dumfries in 2023, with the Dutch right-back having showcased his ability in Serie A with Inter.

The 30-year-old’s impressive spell in Italy only rubs salt in the wounds on Merseyside amid Everton’s right-back issues.

To make things even worse, Fabrizio Romano has now reported that Dumfries will be joining Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants have triggered the player’s €20m (£17m) release clause, with the player agreeing to the move.

It only goes to show the calibre of player in which Benitez passed on back in 2021.

Dumfries was able to return to Inter with five goals this season from the right-back position, which is a seriously impressive output from defence.

Moyes has made it no secret that he wants a right-back signed this summer having insisted with Jake O’Brien again throughout the 2025/26 campaign.

Ironically, it is a Dumfries-style right-back that Everton fans would surely love to see on Merseyside.

The Blues have had little attacking input from their full-backs for years and Dumfries has shown just how significant of a contribution he can provide.

Clearly, Everton missed out big time on the Dutchman back in 2021, but Dumfries is the model they should be basing their scouting around.
