Everton have been told they could fail in their appeal following their point deduction today.

Speaking on talkSPORT, football financial expert Stefan Borson has had his say on how he thinks the outcome of Everton’s appeal will pan out.

The Toffees were handed an immediate 10-point deduction this afternoon after they were found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.

Everton’s case was referred to an independent commission in March after they posted financial losses of £124.5 million over a three-year period, with Premier League clubs only permitted to lose £105m before they are given a fine or point deduction.

The Merseyside outfit have put out a statement that claims they are ‘both shocked and disappointed’ after they were handed the biggest sporting sanction in the competition’s history, while they have also confirmed they will appeal the decision that has left them 19th in the league table.

However, Stefan Borson is unsure whether they will be successful in the appeal.

“Everyone is in agreement that it’s unprecedented,” Borson told talkSPORT.

“It’s the first time the Premier League has taken a club to an independent commission regarding a breach, so the Premier League and Everton agree. The only disagreement is over whether it should be a sporting sanction.

“For the reasons set out in the original judgement, the Premier League are very clear that it should be. I can see no basis on which that shouldn’t be the case. And when you get back to that point then the only question is whether the second appeal commission believe that a £20 million breach is not that big a deal. And I don’t see on what basis it says that, when the original one says it was.”

Can Everton still stay in the Premier League?

Everton and the wider football community are mostly extremely surprised that they have been handed such a significant point deduction, with Simon Jordan admitting that he was expecting them to be docked between three and six points.

However, the Toffees may well have to just get on with it if they are unsuccessful with their appeal.

It is certainly not the end of the world for Sean Dyche’s side, who are now two points from safety after previously sitting in 14th place.

Everton are in a very good place on the pitch and have won four league games from their last seven, which is more than Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town have combined all season.

Given the lack of quality around them, it would amaze me if Everton don’t escape the relegation zone very quickly.

It is not the best situation to be in, but it is certainly the best time for them to be in it. If this had happened at the start of the year, or even the summer, then it could have been disastrous.
