Everton were still in the middle of PSR issues during the 2023 summer transfer window.

Then manager Sean Dyche was forced to offload several players, including the likes of Alex Iwobi, Moise Kean and Yerry Mina.

Everton also let a lot of young talent go, with Tom Cannon and Ellis Simms departing on permanent deals to the Championship.

Everton saw an England international leave, too, and now he’s just joined a team fighting for safety in the Championship, quite remarkably.

Former Everton defender Conor Coady joins Charlton Athletic

Conor Coady spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Everton and was a key player in their fight to survive relegation.

The Toffees had the option of making his loan a permanent deal for just £4.5m, but they decided against it.

Coady ended up joining Leicester City that summer for around £8.5m, but he only went on to start eight games in the Championship.

The former England defender left the Foxes last summer to join Wrexham, and after a shaky start, he wasn’t given another minute of football from September.

Charlton Athletic have now recruited Coady on a loan deal as they look to avoid relegation to League One.

Coady is still only 32, so it’s quite a surprise to see how quickly his decline has been.

Conor Coady excited by new challenge at Charlton

Speaking to Charlton’s website, Coady explained that he’s super excited to represent the Addicks, who are currently sitting 19th in the Championship.

“I’m absolutely over the moon,” the former Everton centre-back said.

“I’m super excited to play in front of the supporters and get going. When I got the opportunity to come to this football club, it filled me with excitement.

“You want to be part of football clubs like this it’s a huge club and I can’t wait for the first game.”

Coady’s first game will be against his former club Leicester at the King Power Stadium this weekend.
