David Moyes is preparing to go into his second full season at Everton.

David Moyes re-joined Everton mid-way through the 2024/25 campaign and he kept them up with relative ease.

In his first full campaign, the Toffees finished in 13th place, which was a disappointing result in the end, having been in the European race in March.

Now, the Everton boss is preparing for his second full season at the club, so we’ve decided to have a closer look at how he usually fares at this stage of the project.

David Moyes’ record in second full season

Moyes’ most recent second full season saw his West Ham United side finish in seventh place, which was a solid achievement.

Although, in the previous campaign, the Hammers managed to finish in sixth place, only two points behind the top four.

So, as harsh as it sounds, his team actually regressed.

Moyes second full seasonLeague finish
West Ham United (2021/22)7th in PL
Everton (2003/04)17th in PL
Preston (1999/00)1st in League One

His other two campaigns resulted in a 17th-placed finish with the Toffees and a League One title with Preston 26 years ago.

At Manchester United, Real Sociedad and Sunderland, Moyes did not have enough success to reach the second full season.

So, there’s very little evidence to suggest that his teams come on stronger in the second year and in actual fact, West Ham fans would argue they got worse further into his project.

Some would say it’s due to his recruitment as he often signs experienced players, which leads to ageing squads.

So, the Friedkin Group simply can’t allow Moyes to sign more experience; this team needs to evolve and bring through younger players.

Everton had the third-oldest average-aged squad in the entire Premier League last season, so the American investors will be keen to recruit younger players this window.

The only issue is whether Moyes actually beds them into his squad, as the likes of Tyler Dibling and Adam Aznou have barely had a kick.
