Everton fans had every right to vocalise their frustrations with Sky Sports, after the many things they have neglected to show during their recent protests.
Such censorship is ludicrous in the modern-day and showcases a very real problem that somehow persists.
Those with the money still control the narrative.
As such, without proper information, there are many fans across England who laugh at the Toffees’ corruption claims, without realising that the fight they wage is not just for themselves.
Although naturally they seek to acquire some justice after receiving the harshest points deduction in English top-flight history, they also could end up abolishing the outdated and unfit-for-purpose profit and sustainability rules, in turn creating a more competitive Premier League.
Manchester City have claimed the title in five of the last six years. From 1995 to 2001 Manchester United failed to win the league just once. Those who are at the top seldom come down unless something catastrophic occurs.
And yet, those below them are hamstrung by a lack of internal revenue that lets them spend at the level needed to progress.
Fortunately, TNT Sports’ coverage yesterday did rectify some of Sky Sports’ errors.
How did TNT Sports show Everton’s Premier League protest?
It was refreshing to see the three pundits headlining the match in an amongst the action, on a day where Everton’s protests against the Premier League took centre stage.
Jules Breach, alongside Peter Crouch and Joe Cole, were actually walking through the fan zone pre-match and briefly stopped to discuss the match.
This allowed fans to pour in behind, spreading their bright yellow message of ‘You Don’t Know What You’re Doing’, the words uttered by the Parliamentary Select Committee in their recent grilling of Richard Masters.
Affording Evertonians this platform to peacefully protest was admirable, and then throughout the match there were various nods to the reasons behind such frustration, frequently showing the material when relevant.
The contrast to Sky Sports’ coverage could not have been more blatant.
Sky Sports’ Everton treatment was shameful
Whilst it was nearly impossible for them to completely block out the protest that turned Goodison Park pink with 39,000 ‘CORRUPT’ signs, there were numerous methods employed to silence Evertonians.
After all, their post of Alejandro Garnacho’s spectacular bicycle kick had seemingly edited out some of those posters in the background.
Not to mention that the coverage seemed to just ignore what was going on, like the stadium wasn’t close to boiling point over their recent ruling.
Frustration was only amplified after their plane, flown over Liverpool’s game against Manchester City earlier that day, was not even shown on the TV cameras either, deemed irrelevant to the clash at hand.
However, the relevancy of a full-blown interview with the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, is undeniable.
And yet, Sky Sports have cut the conversation, with only the organisation and the 54-year-old, who has defended Everton staunchly, knowing what was said.
It is gross censorship of a very real issue, affecting tens of thousands of working-class people and many more around the world.
To silence that, perhaps due to their ties with the Premier League, is shameful. At least TNT Sports did it right.
