I saw Dwight McNeil shine but Newcastle United star was shocking in Everton win

Everton were spotless at Goodison Park, at last, as they brushed aside Newcastle United by a commanding 3-0 scoreline.

Kickstarting the rout with a piledriver in the 79th minute, Dwight McNeil stole the show with his scintillating showing from the right flank in which his work rate and relentless pressing terrorised their visitors.

Going into the game, the visitors were actually regarded as hot favourites, with one BBC pundit actually vocalising his favouritism towards Eddie Howe’s side. Despite their injury woes, the quality within their starting side was expected to carry them through.

However, it was arguably their most experienced star that proved to be their undoing, as Kieran Trippier was largely to blame for the bulk of the goals that soared past Martin Dubravka.

His former boss, Sean Dyche, has a lot to thank the full-back for.

The first, in which McNeil snagged possession from the England international himself, allowed him to run unopposed before lasering home a late opener.

Then, the 33-year-old stalwart once again saw the ball stolen from his feet, with Jack Harrison finding his other winger whose wild swing allowed Abdoulaye Doucoure to tap in.

As if things couldn’t get any worse for Trippier, his lack of focus later played Beto onside to send the home fans into raptures. They had been gifted the three home goals they so sorely craved, and by an elite England international no less.

Although he will dominate the headlines, and rightly so, it feels disingenuous to ignore just how impressive McNeil was.

Finding the crucial breakthrough, all through his own work, he was even credited with an assist too.

This added to the four key passes, four completed crosses and one tackle that all contributed to his well-earned match-high 8.7 rating, via Sofascore.

In a game where much of the narrative surrounded how the hosts might end their Goodison Park hoodoo, the 24-year-old whiz stepped up to score his second goal in as many match weeks.

However, he will seldom have it gifted to him as perfectly as Trippier did.
