Everton’s summer was expected to be one dominated by who might leave, but it did not take long for that narrative to shift.
Kevin Thelwell, having set abysmal expectations, shocked everyone with three signings early in the window, and thus far has no major outgoings to report.
Amadou Onana’s imminent move to Aston Villa is disappointing but acceptable, and it could now mean that Jarrad Branthwaite‘s place at the club is solidified.
His presence at Everton’s pre-season suggests so, but he did have some bad news to bestow.
Jarrad Branthwaite provides injury update
Speaking to Everton’s official X account, having now finally joined up with their pre-season tour, fans will have been buoyed to see their star defender back in their colours.
After all, there has been much speculation over his future, with Manchester United having bid for Branthwaite twice, to no avail.
His presence in Ireland ahead of tomorrow’s game with Sligo Rovers is a crucial one in affirming his commitment to the club, despite reports having suggested Branthwaite’s head had been turned by such transfer interest.
However, it was not all good news.
When being interviewed, he actually revealed that he is nursing an injury, and provided the following update on his plans to return to full fitness: ‘Yeah it’s just a little injury I’ve had. I’ll be back with the team in the next week or so, so it’s nothing major. I can’t wait to get back out there.’
Jarrad Branthwaite looks here to stay at Everton
With the news that Manchester United will not sign Branthwaite, instead opting for Leny Yoro, that surely all but ends their interest in the England international, having made two pitiful bids before scurrying off to Ligue 1 for an alternative.
A truly abysmal effort to pry the 22-year-old from Goodison Park, his staying on Merseyside is arguably the best thing that could have happened for Sean Dyche this summer, regardless of whoever they may sign.

After all, retaining prized assets is imperative to progression, and thus any new acquisitions will only build upon such star presence.
Branthwaite was so crucial in the Toffees’ success last season, as a mainstay in a backline that was near impenetrable in the Premier League.
Only the top three conceded fewer goals than them, with Arsenal the only side to boast more clean sheets too.
Everton’s solidity was the foundation of their easy escape from relegation, foregoing two points deductions to make a mockery of the division.
Now, with Branthwaite here to stay and set to be joined by plenty of additional talent, this marks a really exciting new campaign for Evertonians.
