Everton have been handed a clear warning over signing Manchester City’s John Stones this summer.

The 31-year-old was in action at the weekend for Man City following another season filled with injury issues.

Stones is keen to return to Everton this summer, with his exit from the Etihad Stadium already confirmed.

That was a disgraceful performance from Everton… something has to change! 😤

Everton are eyeing Stones as an option, but Jeff Stelling and Gabriel Agbonlahor have both shared their concerns after what they’ve seen.

Pep Guardiola has hailed Stones as ‘incredible’, yet his recent performance against Aston Villa certainly did not prove that.

The 31-year-old played 78 minutes on Sunday, which the most Premier League game time he’s experienced since August.

“I looked at the second goal, and how he [Ollie Watkins] did John Stones, made me very concerned that John Stones is in the England World Cup squad,” Stelling said on TalkSPORT.

Would a return for John Stones on a free make any sense for Everton? 🧐

“If that’s the sort of shape he’s in, he has had virtually no football.”

Stones also has interest from abroad, with clubs in Serie A also keen on speaking to his representatives.

However, Stones’ injury history should be a concern to Everton considering they already have one unreliable defender in Jarrad Branthwaite due to injury.

“Even when he’s been in the team this season, whenever he’s played, I’ve looked at him and thought he’s lost a yard of pace,” Agbonlahor added.

“He was never quick. John Stones is very good on the ball, and yes, he can play defensive midfield if needed, but I’m worried.”

Everton have also eyed Maxime Esteve from Burnley, who could prove a smarter option given he is considerably younger at the age of 24.

After a hugely frustrating end to the season, Everton need to recruit smartly this summer to avoid another season where clubs like Sunderland outperform them.
