Idrissa Gana Gueye could now be available for selection against Liverpool.

The midfielder was named on the bench for Senegal’s friendly against Cameroon yesterday, with journalist Joe Thomas suggesting that he has overcome the heel injury he suffered ahead of the Bournemouth game.

Gueye had started all seven of Everton’s games in the Premier League this season and had been named in the line-up for their clash with Bournemouth last time out, until he was forced to withdraw due to a heel issue that had flared up in the warm-up.

There has since been talk that the 34-year-old could remain on the sidelines for this weekend’s Merseyside derby and could be out for a number of weeks, however his presence in the Senegal squad now suggests he will be fit to make the trip to Anfield.

While Gueye is likely to be available for the meeting with Liverpool, it is unclear whether he will actually start anyway.

Amadou Onana took his place against the Cherries and put on an impressive display as they put three past Andoni Iraola’s side. Barring any further injuries, it would be a strange decision if Sean Dyche opted to change the starting line-up.

It was time for Gueye to be dropped vs Liverpool anyway

The Everton boss has been searching for his perfect three-man midfield all season and may now have found it, while Idrissa Gana Gueye could be the one to miss out.

The veteran has been far from his best in the opening couple of months of the campaign and arguably hasn’t really deserved his place in the line-up, but Dyche’s lack of options left him with little choice.

Gueye will have to fight to regain his place in the squad and he certainly can’t replicate his disappointing recent performances if he is to make his mark this season.
