David Moyes’ key mistake cost Everton dearly in second half vs Brentford

David Moyes made a costly mistake during Everton’s 4-2 defeat against Brentford on Sunday.

The Toffees were outplayed from start to finish at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, with hat-trick hero Igor Thiago stealing the show.

However, the home side trailed by only one goal at the interval and had the opportunity to turn the game around.

David Moyes made two changes at half-time to help his team complete a comeback, but one of them turned out to be an error.

This was a dismal performance from Everton…

What did YOU make of it?😕

David Moyes makes tactical mistake in second half vs Brentford

Moyes picked Jack Grealish, Dwight McNeil, and Tyler Dibling to play behind Thierno Barry in attack against Brentford.

Then, after failing to challenge Brentford in the first half, Moyes decided to replace Dibling and McNeil with Beto and Merlin Rohl.

However, the problem with these changes was that they left the Toffees without a recognised right-winger on the pitch.

Therefore, all of Everton’s attacking threat came from Grealish on the left side, who ultimately contributed two assists.

His excellent crosses set up rare goals for Beto and Barry, respectively, which made the scoreline look more competitive.

But Everton would have had a much better chance of rescuing a point if they had an attacking outlet on both sides.

Moyes should have kept both target men, Beto and Barry, in the penalty box, with wingers on either side to deliver crosses for them.

It also did not help that Rohl’s second-half display was arguably the worst of any player this season.

Perhaps Moyes will finally consider a 4-4-2 formation in Everton’s next game against Wolves.

Is that the worst individual performance from an Everton player this season? 😬

When will Iliman Ndiaye return from AFCON?

Even though Moyes should have kept Dibling or McNeil on the pitch, neither have proven themselves to be difference-makers this season.

The Toffees are really missing Iliman Ndiaye, who is representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations this winter.

Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye have helped Senegal to the quarter-finals, where they will face Malo on Friday.

If they were to lose, Ndiaye could return to Everton’s line-up against Aston Villa on Sunday, 18 January.

However, if Senegal qualify for the final, the winger will not return to the Toffees until 26 January against Leeds.
