Leon Osman says David Moyes has always wanted someone like £30m star at Everton

Everton recorded a huge win in the Premier League on Sunday against Tottenham Hotspur – and Leon Osman has talked up one player who could really thrive under David Moyes.

Everton put a bit of daylight between themselves and the relegation zone with the 3-2 win, and it was arguably the best performance of the season.

Everton were dominant against Spurs, especially in the first-half.

The Toffees exploited a weakened Spurs side, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Iliman Ndiaye – who Jamie Carragher likened to Steven Pienaar – both getting on the scoresheet with Idrissa Gueye providing assists for both.

Archie Gray then put through his own net just before half-time.

Spurs found two goals in the closing stages of the game which will frustrate Moyes.

But it was an afternoon of positives – and Calvert-Lewin scoring again was great to see.

And he is a player Leon Osman feels could genuinely be a huge beneficiary of David Moyes rejoining the club.

It has not been a good first half of the season for Calvert-Lewin.

The number nine has massively underwhelmed, scoring just two goals under Sean Dyche.

But in the last couple of games under Moyes, he’s looked much more threatening and on Sunday, he took his third goal of the campaign against Spurs so well.

Calvert-Lewin is wanted by Newcastle United and others, but there is a feeling within the fanbase that MOyes’a arrival could be exactly what he needs.

And Leon Osman is one of those people. Writing in his column for BBC Sport, he said: “They created chances, and took them too, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin worked his socks off for the entire game.

“In my time playing for him, Moyes always liked a centre-forward with a presence – well, in fact, he always wanted a striker who could do everything – compete physically, run the channels, hold the ball up and also get on the end of crosses and fly in behind defences with pace.

“I look at Calvert-Lewin and he has got all of those attributes. He is on a run where he is staying fit at the moment, and you can see how much he can help the team when he is injury-free.

“Maybe ending his wait for a goal and scoring for his new manager will bring him some of the confidence he needs.”

Everton keen for Calvert-Lewin contract extension

Sources recently told Everton News that Everton are keen and hopeful that Calvert-Lewin will sign a new contract at the club.

As things currently stand, the player is out of contract in the summer and can now negotiate with clubs overseas to seal a pre-contact move at the end of the season.

It remains to be seen what happens with the player.

But Moyes praised Calvert-Lewin in his first press conference last week, suggesting that he could well be a key difference for the Toffees moving forward.

Between his words and those of Osman, there is surely little chance of a Calvert-Lewin exit in the coming days. Him signing a new deal though is another question – surely the player will want to see how things pan out.
