Everton hero Wayne Rooney recently departed MLS club D.C. United and has already found a new job back in England.

The former striker was manager of the Washington-based side since July 2022, but a fallout with the club’s hierarchy saw him depart his role following the end of their season this weekend.

He was recently touted as a possible replacement for Sean Dyche, with the Everton manager facing pressure before the weekend’s win over Bournemouth, but this will no longer be the case as Rooney is now set to join Birmingham City.

Rooney to return to England

The striker who had two spells at Everton began his managerial career at Derby County, where he overachieved at times given the off-field troubles the club were facing in the Championship.

He is now set to return to the midlands, with Birmingham City set to confirm him as a replacement for John Eustace.

Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed that a deal is close, and claimed that Rooney’s managerial progress will be interesting to follow there.

“It’s now looking advanced for Wayne Rooney to take over as Birmingham City manager,” Romano stated in his Daily Briefing.

“Talks are taking place on details of the deal but Rooney is close to the move after leaving DC United – it’s considered a matter of time.

“From what I know of his coaching career so far, he still needs some experience before we can predict a great future for him, but for sure he wants to do important things as a football as manager as well after such a great playing career.”

Although his experience is somewhat limited given the difficulties at Derby, Rooney has had some impressive qualities as a manager shine through, and Everton may keep a close eye on how he does at Birmingham.

Whilst it is way too soon to view him as a possible Everton manager, if he can help Birmingham perform well, he can make himself a candidate before too long, and he could be a popular choice amongst Everton fans given his affiliation with the club.

Birmingham are currently sixth in the Championship, and Rooney will hope to keep them there by the end of the season.
