Everton’s sensational run under David Moyes continued on Saturday evening as his side defeated Crystal Palace 2-1.

Beto opened the scoring with a composed finish past Dean Henderson before Jean-Philippe Mateta pulled one back just after the half-time interval.

Carlos Alcaraz, on his full Premier League debut, netted the winner in the 80th minute to snatch all three points in the capital.

Victory for Everton lifts them 13 points clear of 18th-placed Ipswich Town, so their Premier League safety is all but secure.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing at Selhurst Park, they had to dig in and perhaps got away with a VAR blunder.

Everton fortunate VAR didn’t give Crystal Palace goal

Jefferson Lerma headed home from a corner in the first half, however, the referee disallowed the goal. as he felt the inswinging ball went out of play on it’s way to the penalty area.

VAR checked it and decide to stick with the onfield referee’s decision, which has since caused a lot of controversy.

Sky Sports’ Izzy Christiansen thinks Palace have been really hard done by, with Everton getting away with one.

“You know what is interesting? Look at the Everton players at the back post, I think they think it’s gone out of play. That tells me: ‘that’s the players’ reaction’ and they’re trying to get the attention of the referees there.

“I think Glasner has every reason to be annoyed because I don’t think there’s any evidence to suggest it has gone out of play. And it’s a great header which changes the entire complexity of the game.”

Premier League release statement on Jefferson Lerma’s disallowed goal

The Premier League Match Centre account was quick to clarify the Lerma decision on X, formerly known as Twitter.

VAR decided that there was no conclusive angle to suggest the ball was still in play, so they decided to trust the referee’s judgement.

Palace fans have been uproared by that ruling, with many suggesting there should be enough camera angles to determine whether a ball has gone out of play.

Perhaps that’ll be one of the main improvements made at the end of the season, so Everton can certainly count themselves lucky on this occasion, though, they were on the receiving end of a poor decision against Bournemouth earlier this month.
