Merlin Rohl shines in Everton cameo, but what he told Alan Myers after the game really impressed him

Everton summer signing Merlin Rohl made his third appearance against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend.

Merlin Rohl has been plagued by a hip injury this season, so he’s only played 68 minutes of Premier League football so far.

Rohl has still been able to leave a good impression on his teammates, and David Moyes has liked what he’s seen, too.

“I’ve been pleased with what I’ve seen, I have to say,” Moyes told the press last month.

“Look, he’s another young boy coming in from a different league, a different speed, a different intensity, but he’ll be able to handle it. I’ve got no doubt about that.”

Everton News columnist Alan Myers has also been encouraged by the 23-year-old after speaking with him post-Tottenham.

Alan Myers really impressed by Merlin Rohl

Writing in his exclusive Everton News column, Myers is absolutely certain Rohl will become a top player and was pleased to hear how motivated he is to improve after grabbing a quick interview with him post-match.

“The second of the substitutes Moyes made was Merlin Rohl and I have to say, from the little I’ve seen of him, I’ve been impressed,” Myers wrote.

“He looks very comfortable on the ball and wants to take it forward at every opportunity which is great to see.

“I spoke with the German midfielder after the game and he told me: ‘I’m delighted to get a few more minutes on the pitch, it’s good that the coach is trusting me. I want to keep improving.’

“It’s very early days, but I honestly believe we have a player on our hands here. Sometimes you can just tell, and I really like the look of him.

“He is calm and assured on the ball and isn’t afraid of putting himself about, I’m looking forward to seeing him progress in this team.”

Merlin Rohl should start vs Sunderland

Considering Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been underwhelming of late, perhaps Rohl should start in the number 10 role against Sunderland.

German football expert Ruairidh Petre told Everton News that Rohl’s best position is as an attacking midfielder.

So it’ll be interesting to see if Moyes takes that route when his side take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light next week.

Moyes could make wholesale changes for the clash, with Tyler Dibling and Thierno Barry also coming in to freshen things up.

Something needs to change, though, as Everton have hit a bit of a wall in recent weeks, having won one in seven.
