Paul Merson says he’d be ‘shocked’ if Everton didn’t achieve one thing this season

Paul Merson has explained his view on what Everton can achieve this season while also sharing what would surprise him.

Everton looked sure picks to avoid relegation a little less than a month ago after picking up some excellent form.

However, this mood all changed when The Toffees were hit with a 10-point deduction which saw them dragged back into the relegation zone.

Despite that, a win against Nottingham Forest this past weekend has left Sean Dyche‘s side just two points behind Luton Town and therefore close to escaping the relegation zone again.

Now Paul Merson has shared his view and highlighted some ‘X-Factor’ results.

Merson on Everton’s chances

Paul Merson was writing in his predictions column on SportsKeeda in which he argued that Everton are a team destined to avoid relegation.

“I’d be shocked if Everton got relegated this season. They’ve got a lot of X-factor results in them, and they did well against Villa away from home.

“Everton can be dangerous on their day and with the three promoted teams struggling in the Premier League, they should be able to stay up.

“Everton are a funny team at home – they’re beating as an away side at the moment. If they’re able to create chances at home, they can cause Newcastle a few problems.”

How soon could Everton escape relegation?

It says a lot about how poor the recently promoted teams have been that despite the huge point deduction, Everton is only a win away from escaping the relegation zone.

Currently, Dyche’s side sit 18th on seven points, but this is just two behind Luton Town who occupy the last position safe from relegation. Due to this a win on Thursday against an injury-plagued Newcastle at Goodison Park could be enough to see Everton escape and potentially not look back.

Therefore, Dyche does seem likely to spend Christmas outside of the relegation spots, with his side’s latest display against Nottingham Forest a huge indicator.

Really The Toffees are a side far too good to be in the relegation spots and that’s why the deduction will be inconsequential come the end of this season as at this rate a mid-table finish still looks likely.
