Everton fans have marvelled watching James Garner this season.

With just one game left to play, the Toffees’ European hopes are pretty much dead after an awful run of form.

Six games without a win leaves Everton needing a miracle to get into the Europa Conference League.

Unfortunately a lot of players have dropped off in recent weeks, and that has partly been down to David Moyes failing to rotate the team enough.

But one man who’s still shown a high level is James Garner, who is surely the favourite to win Everton’s Player of the Season award.

But one man who doesn’t seem that blown away is Paul Scholes.

Paul Scholes wouldn’t take James Garner back at Manchester United this summer

In a new TikTok video, Paul Scholes and his former Manchester United teammate Nicky Butt were stating whether they would sign certain midfielders for United this summer.

And Garner was one player the pair had to decide on.

Without missing a beat, Scholes replied ‘No’, with Nicky Butt saying ‘Maybe’.

James Garner vs Sandro Tonali vs Adam Wharton vs Elliot Anderson

Of the 10 players suggested to them, Scholes said yes to just two players; Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali. He also said ‘Maybe’ to Adam Wharton.

But data indicates that Garner actually beats both Tonali and Wharton in quite a number of metrics this season.

The all-action Everton man has excelled from both an offensive and defensive standpoint, and has also shown brilliant versatility to help his team out.

Anderson is probably the closest player to Garner in terms of the metrics, so if Scholes was willing to take him, then should surely be willing to take Garner too.

Of course, Everton fans will hope that Garner – who was named as the ‘perfect’ Manchester United signing by Sky Sports – would not leave the club this summer. There certainly haven’t been any indications that he will.

Cole Palmer may have recently stated that Garner has been his toughest opponent, but Scholes’ verdict does perhaps just indicate that Garner is still a little bit underrated.

Everton may hope it stays that way though, as Garner is a player they should be looking to build around as he can do it all.
