Pep Guardiola drops fresh update on Jack Grealish’s future amid Everton transfer links

Everton fans are hoping to see some new signings soon, having had a fairly quiet start to the summer so far.

The activity has mainly revolved around players leaving the club.

It was always going to be that way though, with several out of contract and others only at the club on loan.

Everton have bid farewell to Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison, and the two wingers will not be returning as permanent players after failing to impress.

So Everton are in the market for new wingers.

And one player Everton have been strongly linked with is Jack Grealish.

And late last night, Pep Guardiola delivered an update on the England international amid the links to Everton.

Speaking at a press conference, the City boss said: “He had a conversation with the club and decided the best.

“Jack is an exceptional player but he didn’t (play a lot). We decided he has to play.

“We’re honest and he’s honest. We decided the best was to stay (behind) and find that he can play, that he can come back to the player of the year of the treble and all his career at Aston Villa.

“But the fact is he didn’t play much minutes the last two seasons. He has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality that he has.

“We decided don’t come here. What happens I don’t know but if he doesn’t (leave) he is a player for Man City and he will be back.”

Grealish exit heavily suggested, but Everton move will be difficult

It is fairly clear from this update that the intention is for Grealish to change clubs this summer.

The 29-year-old really struggled for minutes in 2024/25, so it is almost inevitable that he will leave.

While this is a positive for Everton, it will still be a hard deal for David Moyes and The Friedkin Group to do.

Ultimately, Grealish’s huge wages could be a real stumbling block.

It would surely take either the player agreeing to a big pay cut, or City paying a big chunk of the wages if he was to come on loan.
