A player who Everton once signed for £25million is set to seal a move to the MLS after holding talks with several European clubs.

Evertonians need no reminder of some of the disastrous transfers made in recent years: Dele Alli, Cenk Tosun and Moise Kean, to name a few.

The summer of 2024 has appeared more positive on the surface, with Illman Ndiaye and Tim Iroegbunam signing permanently. Everton’s business shows no sign of letting up, with Napoli midfielder Jesper Lindstrøm set to sign.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin was signed for £25million in 2019 but went on to make just eight appearances for the Blues.

Gbamin left Everton in 2023 and was signed by French second-tier club USL Dunkerque.

However, the 28-year-old is now on the move once more.

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the Ivory Coast international is now heading to New York City Red Bulls in the MLS.

It’s believed Gbamin is set to sign a seal until December 2026, with the option of an extra year.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s record since Everton exit

Gbamin featured 21 times for Dunkerque during the 2023/24 season, scoring two goals and registering one assist.

Considering that’s over double the number of games he played for Everton, he appears to have somewhat restarted his career.

For Everton, expensive mistakes like the Ivorian must be a thing of the past. Looking to sign young talent for reasonable fees appears to be the route forward.

Sean Dyche’s early business looks positive, and with Lindstrøm set to sign, the Toffees’ new-found transfer strategy appears to be working well.
